Discord server template

Minecraft Discord server template

This template is for the Discord that sits next to a Minecraft server, whether that is a 15-person whitelisted SMP or a public server with hundreds of players online. The server is the product, so the Discord is built around getting people connected, keeping them informed when the server is down, and handling support and applications without DMs.

Who this template is for

  • Whitelisted SMPs that take applications
  • Public Java or Bedrock servers that need a support channel and staff team
  • Modded or plugin-heavy servers that post update notes

If your members just play Minecraft together alongside other games, the gaming template is lighter. Realm groups of friends rarely need applications or a staff hierarchy.

Channels and categories

Every channel, its purpose and who can post. Read-only and private channels are set up with the right permission overwrites, so you do not have to configure them by hand.

  • updatesRead-only (Owner, Admin can post)

Patch notes, new plugins and map resets. Get the Update Ping role to be notified.

  • server-statusRead-only (Owner, Admin, Moderator can post)

Is the server up? Status bot posts and staff updates during downtime.

Join the Server

Why it is laid out this way

server-status
The single most-asked question is "is the server down?". A dedicated read-only channel, ideally fed by a status bot, answers it before anyone asks in #general.
how-to-join
Keep the IP, supported versions and Bedrock port in one read-only channel. Pin nothing in #general; people never read pins.
apply-for-whitelist
A one-hour slowmode stops repeat applications. Post a pinned format so every application has the same fields, and review them privately in #applications-review.
Help
Support and bug reports are separate because they need different answers: support is a person waiting, a bug is a ticket for the developers.
Staff
Helpers can see staff channels but have limited permissions. Applications review is restricted to Moderator and above so new helpers do not judge applications.

Roles and permissions

Roles are listed from highest to lowest. Member and ping roles carry no extra permissions because @everyone already has Discord's defaults. Check any role in the permissions calculator.

Roles from highest to lowest, with what each can do
RoleWhat it can do
OwnerShown separately

Runs the Minecraft server and the Discord. Without Administrator, so channel permissions still apply.

Key permissions: Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Webhooks, Manage Expressions, View Audit Log, Ban Members, Kick Members, Timeout Members, Manage Messages, Manage Threads and Posts, Manage Nicknames, Manage Events, Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles, Mute Members, Deafen Members, Move Members

AdminShown separately

Trusted co-owners with server console access. Same permissions as Owner in Discord.

Key permissions: Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Webhooks, Manage Expressions, View Audit Log, Ban Members, Kick Members, Timeout Members, Manage Messages, Manage Threads and Posts, Manage Nicknames, Manage Events, Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles, Mute Members, Deafen Members, Move Members

ModeratorShown separately

Handles reports in game and in Discord: warnings, mutes, kicks and bans.

Key permissions: Kick Members, Ban Members, Timeout Members, Manage Messages, Manage Threads and Posts, Manage Nicknames, View Audit Log, Mute Members, Move Members

HelperShown separately

Entry-level staff. Answers support questions and can time people out, but cannot kick or ban.

Key permissions: Timeout Members, Manage Messages, Manage Threads and Posts

BuilderShown separately

Recognised builders for spawn and events. Cosmetic in Discord; pair it with a build rank in game.

Whitelisted

Given when an application is accepted. Use it with your whitelist sync bot or give it by hand.

Java

Edition role so staff know how to help.

Bedrock

Edition role for Bedrock players.

Event Ping

Opt-in ping for events.

Update Ping

Opt-in ping for patch notes and resets.

Server rules

Posted to #rules when you build with Discrofy, or copy them.

  1. Respect players and staff

No harassment, slurs or targeting anyone, in Discord or in game. Instant ban for hate speech.

  2. No griefing or stealing

Do not break, take or change anything you did not build without permission. Report griefing in #support with coordinates.

  3. No hacked clients or exploits

X-ray, fly, kill aura, duping and auto-clickers are banned. Report exploits privately in #support, do not share them.

  4. Keep it family friendly

No NSFW builds, skins, signs, names or messages. Many players are under 16.

  5. No advertising other servers

Do not post IPs, invites or links for other Minecraft servers, in chat, DMs or on signs.

  6. Use the right channel

Server help goes in #support, builds in #showcase, trades in #trading. Keep #general for chatting.

  7. Trades are at your own risk

Staff do not refund scams between players. Use a middleman staff member for big trades and never trade real money.

  8. Applications are final

Whitelist and staff decisions are not argued in public. You can reapply after 14 days.

  9. Follow Discord and Minecraft rules

Follow the Discord Community Guidelines and the Minecraft EULA. Breaking them gets you removed from both the Discord and the server.

Want a different tone or stricter rules? Use the Discord rules generator.

Welcome message and onboarding

**Welcome to the SMP, {user}!** ⛏️

• Server IP and versions: #how-to-join
• Want to play? Apply in #apply-for-whitelist using the pinned format.
• Rules: #rules (they apply in game too)
• Stuck? Ask in #support with your IGN.

See you at spawn.
  1. Pin an application format in #apply-for-whitelist before you open applications.
  2. Add a status bot that posts player count and uptime in #server-status.
  3. Link Discord to the game with a whitelist or chat-sync plugin (for example DiscordSRV) so accepted players get Whitelisted automatically.
  4. Use Onboarding to ask Java or Bedrock and which pings members want.

Moderation and AutoMod

Discord AutoMod rules to turn on

  • Block other servers’ IPs with a keyword regex for common hosts, for example `\b[a-z0-9-]+\.(aternos|minehut)\.(me|gg)\b`.
  • Block invite links everywhere except staff channels.
  • Turn on the commonly flagged words filter: many players are young.
  • Block mention spam at 5 unique mentions.

How to moderate it

  • Keep one punishment log for in-game and Discord actions so a player banned in game is not chatting freely in Discord.
  • Require two staff votes on whitelist applications to avoid favouritism.
  • Post planned downtime in #server-status before it happens, not after.
  • Ask griefing reports to include coordinates and the time; most server tools can roll back from that.

Recommended server settings

SettingValueWhy
Verification levelMediumStops brand new raid accounts while letting young players join.
Explicit media filterFilter for all membersPlayers are often under 16.
Default notificationsOnly @mentionsStatus and update pings still reach people who opted in.
Server rules screeningOn (Community)Members accept the rules before they can post, which makes bans for rule breaks easier to justify.

Suggested bots

  • Discrofy: Builds this layout and manages AutoMod and moderation from a dashboard.
  • DiscordSRV (plugin): Bridges in-game chat and Discord, syncs roles and can link accounts for the whitelist.
  • A server status bot: Posts whether the server is online and how many players are on.

Build it in about a minute

Discrofy creates every category, channel, role and permission above in your server, then posts the rules. It only adds, so existing channels are kept, and you can undo the build from your dashboard. Your first build each month is free.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for Bedrock and Java servers?+

Yes. There are edition roles for Java and Bedrock, and #how-to-join is where you post both connection methods and the Bedrock port.

How do I link the whitelist to Discord?+

Use a plugin such as DiscordSRV or a whitelist bot that gives the Whitelisted role when an application is accepted. The template gives you the role and the review channel; the plugin does the sync.

Do I need a ticket bot?+

Not to start. #support with a slowmode works for small servers. Add tickets once you get more than a few support requests a day or need private reports.

Will building this change my Minecraft server?+

No. Discrofy only changes your Discord server. Nothing on your Minecraft host is touched.
