Discord server template
Gaming Discord server template
This template is for a gaming community that plays more than one game: a friend group that keeps growing, a content creator’s player base, or a server built around a genre. It is designed around the two things gaming servers live or die on, finding people to play with and voice channels that are never full or empty.
Free. Adds channels and roles, deletes nothing.

Who this template is for
- Communities of 20 to 5,000 people who play several games
- Friend groups that are starting to invite friends of friends
- Servers where most activity happens in voice
If your server is built around one game with its own systems (a Minecraft server, a Roblox game or a FiveM city), start from that template instead. Competitive teams with rosters and scrims should use the esports template.
Channels and categories
Every channel, its purpose and who can post. Read-only and private channels are set up with the right permission overwrites, so you do not have to configure them by hand.

Why it is laid out this way
- Start Here
- Rules, announcements and events are read-only, so the important information is never buried under chat. Events has its own channel so game nights do not get lost among server updates.
- lfg
- One LFG channel with a 60-second slowmode beats a separate LFG channel per game: it stays active even when one game is quiet, and the posting format makes posts easy to scan.
- Genre ping roles
- FPS, MMO, Battle Royale and Casual & Indie are mentionable on purpose. Someone looking for a squad can ping the people who opted in, instead of @everyone.
- Games
- Channels are grouped by genre rather than by title. Ten single-game channels where nine are dead makes a server feel empty. Split a genre into its own game channel once it is busy.
- Voice
- Numbered squad channels instead of one per game, because people switch games mid-session. Set AFK as the server’s AFK channel in settings.
- Staff
- Hidden from everyone except Owner and Moderator. The mod log is read-only so bots can post and humans do not bury the record.
Roles and permissions
Roles are listed from highest to lowest. Member and ping roles carry no extra permissions because @everyone already has Discord's defaults. Check any role in the permissions calculator.
| Role | What it can do |
|---|---|
| OwnerShown separately | You. Runs the server without the Administrator flag, so channel permissions still apply and a stolen session does less damage. Key permissions: Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Webhooks, Manage Expressions, View Audit Log, Ban Members, Kick Members, Timeout Members, Manage Messages, Manage Threads and Posts, Manage Nicknames, Manage Events, Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles, Mute Members, Deafen Members, Move Members |
| ModeratorShown separately | Handles reports, timeouts, kicks and bans, and can move people between voice channels. Give this to people who have been active and fair for a while. Key permissions: Kick Members, Ban Members, Timeout Members, Manage Messages, Manage Threads and Posts, Manage Nicknames, View Audit Log, Mute Members, Move Members |
| Event HostShown separately | Runs game nights. Can create and edit events, ping for them, and manage voice during the event without full moderator powers. Key permissions: Manage Events, Mention @everyone, @here and All Roles, Mute Members, Move Members |
| VeteranShown separately | Recognition for long-time regulars. Shown separately in the member list, with no extra permissions. |
| FPS | Opt-in ping role. Members pick it in Discord’s onboarding or Channels & Roles. |
| MMO | Opt-in ping role for MMO players. |
| Battle Royale | Opt-in ping role for battle royale squads. |
| Casual & Indie | Opt-in ping role for co-op and indie games. |
| Event Ping | Opt-in role pinged when an event is announced. |
Server rules
Posted to #rules when you build with Discrofy, or copy them.
Be a good teammate
Trash talk stays friendly. No targeted insults, raging at teammates, or flaming people for their rank or skill.
No hate speech or harassment
No slurs, threats or harassment, including in DMs with people you met here. This is an instant ban.
Keep it safe for work
No sexual, gory or shock content in chat, clips, names or avatars. Some members are under 18.
Use the right channel
LFG posts go in #lfg, clips in #clips, game talk in its game channel. Off-topic chat lives in #general.
No cheats, exploits or account selling
Do not share, sell or ask for cheats, boosting, exploits or accounts. Report bugs to the developers.
No spam or self-promo
No flooding, mass pings or ads. Share your stream or channel only in #self-promo, and only your own content.
Voice etiquette
No ear-rape, soundboard spam or recording people without asking. Join a squad channel that has room.
Tag spoilers
Use ||spoiler tags|| for story spoilers in new releases for at least two weeks after launch.
Moderators have the final say
Disagree with a decision? Message a moderator privately. Arguing in public chat makes things worse.
Follow Discord’s rules
Follow the Discord Terms of Service and Community Guidelines at discord.com/guidelines.
Want a different tone or stricter rules? Use the Discord rules generator.
Welcome message and onboarding
**Welcome to the server, {user}!** 🎮
1. Read #rules (it takes 30 seconds).
2. Pick your games in **Channels & Roles** so the right channels show up and you get pinged for squads.
3. Say hi in #introductions with what you play and your timezone.
4. Need people to play with? Post in #lfg.
See you in voice.- Turn on Community in Server Settings, then Onboarding, and add a question "What do you play?" with the four genre roles as answers.
- Add a second onboarding question for Event Ping so people choose notifications up front.
- Point Discord’s welcome screen at #rules, #lfg and #introductions.
- Post the welcome message above with a bot that greets new members, or pin it in #general.
Moderation and AutoMod
Discord AutoMod rules to turn on
- Block mention spam: 5 or more unique mentions in one message.
- Turn on Discord’s commonly flagged words filter (slurs and sexual content) for all channels.
- Block invite links (discord.gg/) outside #self-promo.
- Add a custom keyword rule for scam phrases: "free nitro", "steam gift", "csgo skins giveaway".
- Enable "Block suspected spam content".
How to moderate it
- Use timeouts first. A one-hour timeout fixes most heat-of-the-moment problems without losing the member.
- Log every moderation action in #mod-log with the rule number, so other mods have context.
- Watch voice: most gaming server problems happen there, not in text. Give moderators Move Members to split up arguments.
- Recruit moderators from active, calm regulars in different timezones so voice is covered at night.
Recommended server settings
| Setting | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Verification level | Medium | Accounts must be registered for 5 minutes, which stops most raid bots without bothering real players. |
| Default notifications | Only @mentions | Active gaming chat on "All messages" makes people mute the server, then they miss events. |
| Explicit media filter | Filter for all members | Catches explicit images in clips and memes. |
| AFK channel | AFK, 15 minutes | Frees up squad channels when people walk away. |
| Community and Onboarding | On | Lets members pick genre roles on join so they only see relevant channels and pings. |
Suggested bots
- Discrofy: Builds this layout, manages AutoMod from a dashboard and gives you analytics on which game channels are actually used.
- A music or soundboard bot: Optional for game nights. Restrict its commands to voice text chat so it does not flood #general.
- A Twitch/YouTube notifier: If members stream, post go-live alerts in #self-promo rather than #general.
Build it in about a minute
Discrofy creates every category, channel, role and permission above in your server, then posts the rules. It only adds, so existing channels are kept, and you can undo the build from your dashboard. Your first build each month is free.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use this gaming Discord template?+
Build it into your server with Discrofy in about a minute: it creates the categories, channels, roles and permissions shown here and adds rather than deletes. Or recreate it by hand using the outline on this page.
Will it delete my existing channels?+
No. Discrofy builds additively: channels and roles with the same names are skipped, and nothing existing is removed. You can undo the build from the dashboard.
Should I make a channel for every game?+
Not at first. Start with genre channels and split a game out when it has steady daily conversation. Lots of empty channels make a new server feel dead.
How do members get the genre roles?+
Use Discord’s built-in Onboarding (Server Settings, Onboarding) or Channels & Roles. Both are free and do not need a reaction-role bot.
Why is there no Administrator role?+
Administrator bypasses every channel permission, so a mistake or a compromised account can do anything. The Owner role has the specific permissions needed to run the server instead.
