Discord server template

Roleplay Discord server template

Text roleplay servers live or die on three things: a clear world, a fair way to approve characters, and a hard line between in character and out of character. This template puts the lore first, gates IC scene channels behind an Approved role so new members read before they write, and gives Game Masters the tools to run plots without full moderator powers.

Who this template is for

  • Fantasy, sci-fi, modern and fandom text RP servers
  • Servers with a written world, factions and Game Masters
  • Literate and semi-literate roleplay communities

Voice-based game RP servers such as FiveM cities need whitelist and department channels instead; use the FiveM template. Casual one-off RP in a friend group needs only a couple of channels.

Channels and categories

Every channel, its purpose and who can post. Read-only and private channels are set up with the right permission overwrites, so you do not have to configure them by hand.

Why it is laid out this way

Scenes
Everyone can read scenes, so new members learn the writing style, but only Approved characters and Game Masters can post. The category permission is inherited by every scene channel.
character-submissions
A 10-minute slowmode stops people reposting a sheet repeatedly while waiting. Staff discuss privately in #approval-queue, then repost approved sheets to #approved-characters.
World
Lore, factions and locations are read-only and maintained by Lore Keepers so the canon stays consistent and easy to find.
private-scenes
Threads give small scenes their own space without creating dozens of channels. Archive them when the scene ends.
Out of Character
A dedicated OOC area keeps scene channels clean. #plot-requests is how quiet members find partners.

Roles and permissions

Roles are listed from highest to lowest. Member and ping roles carry no extra permissions because @everyone already has Discord's defaults. Check any role in the permissions calculator.

Server rules

Posted to #rules when you build with Discrofy, or copy them.

  1. In character stays in character channels

IC posts go in scene channels only. Use (( double brackets )) or #ooc-chat for out-of-character talk.

  2. No godmodding or metagaming

Do not control other people’s characters, make your character unbeatable, or use OOC knowledge in character.

  3. Characters need approval

Submit a sheet in #character-submissions and wait for a Game Master to approve it before you post IC.

  4. Respect the lore

Stay consistent with #lore. Big world changes, such as killing named NPCs or founding nations, need GM approval.

  5. Consent for dark themes

Ask OOC before graphic violence, character death or heavy topics, and stop if a partner says no. Sexual content is not allowed.

  6. Separate player from character

Characters can be enemies; players cannot. Take IC conflict OOC only to resolve it calmly.

  7. Write with effort

Aim for at least a few sentences per post in scenes, and do not abandon scenes without telling your partners.

  8. Follow Discord’s rules

Follow the Discord Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Members must be 16 or older.

Welcome message and onboarding

**Welcome, traveller {user}!** 🗡️

To start roleplaying:
1. Read #rules and #lore.
2. Copy the sheet in #character-template.
3. Submit it in #character-submissions.
4. Once a Game Master approves it, you can post in the scene channels.

Until then, say hi in #ooc-chat and read a few scenes to get a feel for the world.
  1. Write at least the core lore, factions and three locations before opening the server.
  2. Post a character sheet template with the fields you need: name, age, appearance, faction, abilities, limits, backstory.
  3. Agree as staff what makes a sheet approvable so Game Masters judge consistently.
  4. Start with three or four scene channels. Add locations when the existing ones get busy.

Moderation and AutoMod

Discord AutoMod rules to turn on

  • Turn on the commonly flagged words and sexual content filters; sexual RP is not allowed.
  • Block invite links everywhere: advertising other RP servers is the most common spam.
  • Block mention spam at 5 unique mentions.
  • Add a keyword alert (not a block) for real-world self-harm phrases so staff can check on members whose posts drift from fiction.

How to moderate it

  • Handle IC disputes OOC and privately. Never punish a player for what their character did in an agreed scene.
  • Respond to character submissions within 48 hours; slow approvals are the main reason new members leave RP servers.
  • Rotate Game Masters across scenes so no plot depends on one person.
  • Check consent issues immediately: if a partner withdraws, the scene stops.

Suggested bots

  • Discrofy: Builds this layout and manages AutoMod and moderation from a dashboard.
  • A dice bot: Rolls dice for combat and skill checks so results are visible and fair.
  • A proxy bot (for example Tupperbox): Lets players post as their character with its own name and avatar.

Build it in about a minute

Discrofy creates every category, channel, role and permission above in your server, then posts the rules. It only adds, so existing channels are kept, and you can undo the build from your dashboard. Your first build each month is free.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop people posting in scenes before approval?+

The Scenes category denies sending messages to @everyone and allows it for Approved and Game Master. Give Approved when a character is accepted and every scene channel unlocks.

Can people use proxy bots like Tupperbox?+

Yes. Proxy bots post through webhooks. Make sure the bot has Manage Webhooks and can see the scene channels.

What should a character sheet include?+

Name, age, appearance, faction, personality, abilities with limits and a short backstory. Ask for limits explicitly; it is how you stop overpowered characters early.

Does this work for non-fantasy settings?+

Yes. Rename the scene channels and World category for your setting: a city, a ship, a school. The approval flow and IC/OOC split work for any genre.
